Central Nervous System

We focus our activities on various CNS disorders such as attention deficit disorder, memory and cognitive impairment, as well as damage to CNS due to hypoxia, metabolic poisons, substances of abuse as well as pharmacological agents used in the treatments of various ailments such as cancer. The neuroprotective compounds and formulations are being developed with a central premise that some forms of CNS disorders, in particular neurodegenerative, may be viewed as energy-deficit syndromes secondary to metabolic hypofunctionality and/or to an absolute or relative deficiency of selected nutrients.
We are studying various compounds and their combinations to provide synergistic actions at the metabolic, neurotrophic and neuroprotective levels that are useful in restoring the neuronal balance and neurological deficits.

The mechanism of toxicity and role of metabolic factors is very important can be of potential benefit in finding the effective supplementation an effective dietary support in various disease states:

  • Stroke, ischemia, trauma e.g. spinal cord injury
  • Parkinson disease and other neurodegenerative diseases
  • Mental retardation (e.g. Downs, Fragile X)
  • Affective disorders (e.g. depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism and schizophrenia)
  • Epilepsy and migraine
  • Drug (e.g. methamphetamine, cocaine) and alcohol addiction
  • Multiple sclerosis - progression of symptoms and nerve damage due to the autoimmune response can be slowed

Reproductive System

The problems associated with reproduction in both males and females are being targeted.

Male reproduction: The role of metabolism and especially antioxidants in sperm function and especially sperm quality is being investigated in a number of clinical trials both in Europe and USA. These are double blind; placebo-controlled, usually cross-over studies, performed under strict GCP guidelines in specialist and experienced Institutions by world-recognised experts in their fields. The positive role of our lead product, based on providing metabolic support to the testis tissues, Proxeed® has been shown by a number of clinical studies to date, to improve sperm quality. Further studies are under way and others are in the pipeline to study the sperm quality using sperm chromatin assay (SCSA) and its improvement by more advanced Proxeed formulations.

Female reproduction: The ovum quality is also affected by metabolism and antioxidants and this is being evaluated by various studies. The development of the embryo during pregnancy has also to be assured and this can be done by providing adequate levels of essential nutrients to the mother. The role of polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids has been evaluated by a number of studies and the rationale for the efficacy of such a product determined. We have developed a highly bioavailable omega 3 (from natural sources), Megasol®, targeted to all women, especially during pregnancy.

Cardiovascular system

Problems in the cardiovascular system, arise due to multi-factorial reasons which eventually lead to the disease state or conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart failure etc. Heart failure for example is a pathological physiological state of circulation, metabolism and cardiomyopathy which leads to heart hypofunction and is characterized by sodium and fluid retention, sympathetic overactivity, parasympathetic withdrawal, vasoconstrictor activation, cytokine elevation, as well as metabolic insufficiency of the myocardial tissue itself. Another paramount aspect of this condition is the severe muscle wasting syndrome which very negatively affects the quality of life of these subjects.

We are in the process of developing various compounds and formulations to help ameliorate most of the above features.

Musculo-skeletal system

Various factors play a role in the maintenance and recovery process of the musculo-skeletal system following everyday activities and especially after any traumatic events. A significant enhancement of recovery of muscle and bone health may be achieved by using a metabolic approach like supplementation with osteogenic aids. We have developed supplement formulations for specific conditions such as:
· Osteoporosis
· Recovery following limb fracture
· Muscle endurance and recovery
· Chronic fatigue syndrome

For example, a number of factors are known to affect muscle and bone dystrophy as well as bone healing time following fracture. Fracture healing is known to be compromised in conditions of metabolic disturbance e.g. diabetes. Trauma might also injure muscle and bone tissue directly. Therefore for recovery there has to be an adequate improvement in specific metabolic aspects to ensure healing. In addition, following this type of injury the deterioration of muscle and other body systems due to resulting immobilisation and disuse, have to be also minimised or better still, prevented altogether.
A formulation is under development to enhance acute recovery following bone fractures or other traumatic injury, which leads to injury/dystrophy of the musculo-skeletal system.
We are also developing a formulation for improving muscle function in chronic fatigue syndrome.

Eye Health

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of severe vision loss among people over 65, and, as life expectancy increases, the disease is becoming an increasingly important problem. AMD is a slowly progressive disease of the central retina (macula) resulting in impairment of principal retinal functions. Unfortunately, the cause of macular degeneration is unknown. We have developed a formulation, which helps slow down the progression this condition and ameliorate it Phototrop® was tested in a double blind, placebo controlled study in patients aged 55 to 70 years treated for 12 months and significant improvements were seen on visual function.
